MORAI, Inc. (CEO Jeong Ji-won, Hong Jun), a company specializing in autonomous driving simulation, held the “SHARK Autonomous Driving Competition” event with the Seongnam Industry Promotion Agency.

SHARK (Seongnam High-tech Autonomous Road FrameworK) refers to a simulation platform that helps test autonomous driving technology according to various variables such as traffic, weather, and road conditions in a virtual space that resembles downtown Seongnam as a digital twin. …

MORAI has signed a business agreement with Seongnam City to provide the SHARK platform and technical training to companies, research institutes and schools researching and developing unmanned vehicles such as self-driving cars, drones and robots. The SHARK Autonomous Driving Competition, one of the cooperative projects between Seongnam City and MORAI, was planned to enhance the competitiveness of Korea’s autonomous driving software technology by training researchers in the field of autonomous driving software.

On November 24, about 50 students from Gachon University, Konkuk University, Dankook University, Sungkyunkwan University, Ajou University, Incheon University and Hanyang University participated as a team in the competition held at the Seongnam Global Convergence Center. Participants used the SHARK platform to drive a designated route on a map of Seongnam, competing on their ability to judge driving according to traffic lights and their ability to avoid obstacles using only sensors without GPS. They also performed tasks such as avoiding static obstacles on the road and dynamic obstacles such as pedestrians while driving, parking in the “shaded areas” where GPS does not work, and driving stably while maintaining a distance from surrounding vehicles. In this competition, participants competed to show how well their self-driving cars can respond to various situations they may encounter on the road in terms of the cars’ detection, judgment, and control capabilities. A professor from the Department of Intelligent Vehicle Engineering at Kongju University and a professor from the Department of Future Automotive Engineering at Yeungnam University served as judges and selected excellent teams.

Hanyang University’s anywHere team won the grand prize in the competition. The Konkuk University’s Naalsdaals team was the runner-up. Third place went to AMSL from Gachon University, ICElab from Dankook University, HEVEN from Sungkyunkwan University, and AJOU MONEY from Ajou University. The grand prize winners received a prize of 2 million won, the second place team received a prize of 1 million won, and the third place teams received a prize of 500,000 won.

MORAI CEO Jeong Ji-won said, “MORAI and Seongnam City are working together to transform the city into a self-driving technology city with self-driving cars, UAM, and robots. It was great that in this competition, which was organized with Seongnam City to develop the technology of Korea’s autonomous driving industry, participants could test autonomous driving technology in a realistic environment rather than just theoretical knowledge. Our company plans to further develop our autonomous driving technology by actively forming partnerships with the government, academia, and industry.”

MORAI is headquartered in Pangyo Techno Valley, a pilot area for autonomous driving technology. In October of this year, its autonomous driving technology was verified in M-City, an experimental city dedicated to autonomous driving in the U.S., and is cooperating with M-City.
