Korean startup Zenerate provides AI-based early stage building design solutions for optimum constructions

Artificial Intelligence(AI) and IoT (Internet of Things) technologies are being extensively used in the fields of design, architecture, and space management. Smart construction solutions for smart cities are disrupting the traditional design forms. Korean startup Zenerate has devised a building design solution based on AI to optimize spatial and structural developments.

The algorithm generates millions of building design possibilities

Zenerate is a software company that provides building design AI solutions. Its main service product is ‘PropFit’, a solution that maximizes architectural development projects’ viability using building design automation and AI technology. PropFit’s algorithm generates over one million proposals to help clients find the best solution in their desired conditions.

In addition to getting things done quickly by automating what is being done manually, PropFit searches and offers all possible building design alternatives. This can benefit architects, urban planners, and designers immensely. The system works in a simple pattern, where the project objectives like plans, rental/home price, construction cost, etc., are fed to the AI-based engine, which then generates the millions of possible options for building design. The startup is currently providing consultancy service but eventually wants to develop the platform where clients can operate the system in real-time for optimum output.

Ultimate goal to resolve the issue of the urban housing shortage

The startup has been founded by Bongjai Shin, who holds a Master’s degree in architecture design from Harvard University.  Before forming the company, Shin had conducted an R&D in building design automation in the US in 2017 with a small team. In 2019, he applied the Zenerate solution to the dormitory project at the University of Southern California (USC). The technology has also been recognized at a number of conferences, including the American Institute of Architects. In June 2020, it registered as a business in Korea and completed the seed round investment attraction in July.

Currently, Shin’s startup is operated with 9 people, including team members in Los Angeles and New York, USA. The team consists of architectural designers, AI developers, web developers, back-end developers, and graphic designers. The co-CEO is Jeong Ga-hye, a doctorate in mathematics from Caltech.

Zenerate’s primary goal is to provide many solutions that will change the way traditional buildings are designed. The company aims to make design sustainable and practical using AI so that it can be applied for various building design problems like building utilities for disabled people, older adults, hospitals, etc. Shin believes Zenerate can ultimately contribute to solving the problem of urban housing shortages.
