Virtual Reality/ Augmented Reality (VR/AR) is becoming the fastest growing technology today. With more contactless options, preferred the usage of VR/AR technology becomes more critical. Korean startups are specializing in VR/AR and bringing in a lot of innovation every day.

1. EVR Studio

The startup is trying to stand out in the world of VR games, with its VR adventure game ‘Project M.’ EVR Studio’s ‘Project M’ is all about a cinematic narrative with highly detailed and defined digital AI characters. ‘Project M’, was first introduced to the public in 2016 at the Seoul Unreal Summit.

EVR Studio has also released two short titles that take place within the Project M world. It includes Project M: Dream, and Project M: Daydream, a short VR experience that allows players to interact with a digital friend, go skydiving and hang out at the beach in daydreams. In June 2018, the company announced about introducing its two new heroines from the upcoming Project M world. EVR Studio got its seed funding from Kakao Ventures and Altos Ventures.

2. Gaudio Lab

It is an audio technology startup that endeavors to bring extraordinary sound experience for the world using AR/VR. Gaudio Labs has developed some audio software technologies that integrate interactive sound into 360-degree content. Gaudio’s technology consists of VR Audio Packager VR Audio (Client) SDK that can be installed on any media streaming platform’s servers and clients.

Its’ Interactive Binaural technology pairs audio and visual according to the Head Orientation. The startup is customizing solutions for companies like Honda, Naver, and has partnerships with Tiledmedia and NexStreaming. Its core team has invented numerous patented technologies and excels in algorithm development with in-depth knowledge in acoustics, psychoacoustics, and signal processing. The startup has been the winner of the AMD Studios VR Awards 2017 Innovative VR Company of the Year.

3. Visual Camp

The startup has developed the eye-tracking algorithms that measure users’ gaze point in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and the mobile environment by tracking eyes’ movements. VisualCamp’s technology can gauge smartphone uses, driving, VR/AR display usage, online classes, etc. The startup was launched in 2014 and has been focused on developing eye-tracking optimized for mobile devices from the start featuring faster algorithms, lower latency, and CPU utilization.

It has already proved its technical competitiveness and uniqueness against the competitors. In April 2020, VisualCamp launched its SeeSo website, a mobile eye tracking and gaze analytic SDK that allows developers to know where users are looking and gauge their concentration. In June 2020, it launched SeeSo 2.0, a mobile eye tracking software for developers. “I recently wanted to give agency to those who are anxious about the Coronavirus. The increasing remote nature of daily life and the issues that arise because of it has many asking us about eye-tracking.”, said Suk Yun-Chan, the CEO of Visual Camp.

4. Urbanbase

This Korean startup specializes in a 3D spatial data platform for interior design and architecture with VR/AR tools. Urbanbase has patented technology for creating 2D floorplans in 3D, AR, and VR, in just a few seconds.

Urbanbase offers a B2C VR home furnishing platform and Augmented Reality mobile application for revolutionary interior design experience. It also has a B2B sales tool based on internally developed 3D, AR, VR APIs for real estate, home designing, architecture, retail, etc. Urbanbase has over 40 clients and partnerships that include names like LG, iLoom, and Daelim.

5. Amaze

Amaze develops, curates, and produces VR content for those who want to be a part of the next wave of content creation. The curated platform provides end-to-end service for virtual reality experiences through custom equipment and tools, proprietary software, and a hands-on team. The startup distributes its content through Steam, Oculus Rift, Oculus Go, Samsung Gear VR, Windows Mixed Reality (WMR), Viveport, and Google Daydream.

Amaze was founded in 2014, and within five months, it was ranked number one Free App in the Gear VR Oculus Store. Recently the company announced launch of its new venture, Amaze Immersive Concerts. In times of COVID-19, when live performances are prohibited, Amaze Immersive Concerts aims to provide a cutting-edge alternative to keep artists and fans connected.
